Coming up in July, I
have a huge family reunion. There will be long lost cousins, weird aunts I've never met. There's pretty much going to be a lot of people (we have it planned for at least 70).
Since art is my passion, I realized this would be the perfect opportunity to make
some money. Then I realized I might as well right an article about it too. So
here it is; making money from your artwork.
Make it good
This should be the most
obvious step. It’s a lot easier to sell someone something of quality. It’s
possible with good enough marketing skills to sell an average to low quality
product but I’d say aim for the best. Make sure your art is properly framed if
it is a drawing or painting. Make sure there are no stains on it or dirt and
package it nicely. If it’s a song, make sure it’s got good sound quality. If it
looks like it was prepared with care more people will be willing to pay for
it.
Price It Accordingly
Many people think artist
can't make a living only with their art. The truth is, it all depends on how
good of a salesman you are. You can be an amazing artist and still make less
than a beginner just because you don't know anything about selling. When your
pricing your art there are three things you should think about; the amount of
time it took you to make it, the number of years of experience, and how similar
works are priced. Pricing your art can also impact your image. If you're
selling your art dirt cheap, people will assume something’s wrong with it or its
not very good.
Produce a Lot of Work
People like to have
options. While you might not sell everything, it’s always good to have more
than one thing to choose from. Having a lot of art also makes you look more
professional because it shows that you spend a lot of time practicing.
Selling Your Art Online
Selling art online is a
lot more complicated than selling at a family reunion because you actually have
to actively find people to sell to. You won't have a captive audience of over
70 people who are all your family. You have to put your name out there and do
some advertising. You can start a website to host your work and advertise your
website like I show you here. There are also
several websites where you can easily post your art for free like deviantART. Even though
selling online may be harder, there are some major advantages to it.
- You can sell unlimited numbers of prints if you use
services like deviantART. This allows you to make passive income that you
can continue benefiting from without any upkeep.
- Once you get customers, more customers will find you.
After you get a following you can pretty much focus just on your art. Your
name can spread quite quickly on the web just by word of mouth.
- You’re advertising to the world. You can reach far more
people online than you could ever meet. I've gotten things online from
other countries before that I might never have even known about if it wasn’t
for the internet.
